By joining us, you will drive innovation and contribute to the exhilarating work that we do.
We are seeking a strategic Director of Technology to lead the engineering vision and execution for Australia’s premier streaming ecosystem. As we unify Stan and 9Now onto a single technology stack, you will be the executive leader responsible for the entire engineering function - people, process, and platform.
You will manage a high-performing, distributed division of engineers and senior technical leaders. Your mandate is to oversee the convergence of our platforms, ensuring that the technical strategy is successfully executed, operationally viable, and delivered on time. You will own the architectural roadmap and the delivery engine that brings it to life.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Technical Strategy & Unification: Own the technical roadmap to consolidate Stan and 9Now onto a single, scalable stack. You will direct the platform vision, ensuring decisions regarding cloud infrastructure, data migration, and system design align with long-term business goals and budget.
- Post-Migration Platform Management: Once unified, you will own the "Single Stack" that powers multiple brands. You will ensure the platform is flexible enough to configure distinct experiences for Stan and 9Now without requiring forked codebases
- AI Strategy & Thought Leadership: Champion the adoption and integration of Artificial Intelligence across the engineering team. Drive initiatives to leverage AI coding assistants and GenAI tools to move beyond basic automation toward agentic workflows. Partner closely with the Product team to explore and implement AI-driven product features (e.g., advanced recommendation systems, personalised user experiences, automated content metadata extraction, LLM integrations for search/discovery) that deliver business value and elevate the experience.
- Engineering Leadership: Lead, mentor, and scale a diverse engineering division. You will manage a mix of delivery teams, senior engineering leaders, and high-level individual contributors (Principal/Distinguished Engineers), ensuring a balance between innovation, stability, and speed.
- Delivery Excellence: Own the software development lifecycle (SDLC). Implement and optimise processes (Agile, CI/CD) that allow the team to ship high-quality code frequently. You are the barrier-breaker who ensures the team maintains velocity during complex integrations.
- Legacy Migration: Lead the complex operational effort of migrating legacy systems and data into the new unified architecture while minimising technical debt and ensuring zero downtime for end-users.
- Commercial & Product Alignment: Partner closely with the Director of Product to ensure engineering capacity maps to business priorities. You will be the primary technical voice in executive forums, articulating the ROI of technical initiatives and managing scope trade-offs.
- Vendor & Budget Management: Oversee the engineering budget, including cloud infrastructure costs and third-party tooling. Manage relationships with key technology partners to ensure value and performance.
Skills, Experience & Behaviours:
- Transformation Experience: Proven ability to lead teams through mergers, re-platforming, or significant tech stack consolidations. You can maintain team focus and morale during periods of ambiguity and change.
- AI & Emerging Technologies: Demonstrated thought leadership and practical experience in evaluating and integrating AI/ML technologies into software development workflows and consumer-facing products. Ability to balance the innovative potential of AI with security, privacy, and scalable architectural practices.
- Senior Engineering Management: Significant experience leading large technical organisations (50+ staff) in a high-scale environment. You are a "Manager of Managers" skilled at structuring teams for efficiency and growth.
- Architectural Governance: Strong background in distributed systems and cloud architecture. While you delegate detailed design work to your architects, you possess the technical gravity to evaluate proposals, challenge assumptions, and make the final call on critical technical decisions.
- Streaming Domain Knowledge: Deep understanding of the video streaming landscape (video encoding, DRM, CDNs, Ad-Tech) and the unique challenges of high-concurrency live events.
- Collaboration & Influence: Outstanding communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical risks into clear business language for executive stakeholders.
